We got in to Chacala yesterday afternoon and took these pictures right after we got the anchor set. This is our view.
This is a very nice little cove, but somewhat exposed to West and Southwest, so there’s a good swell coming in with up to four foot waves breaking on the beach. We put out a stern anchor to keep Charisma pointed into the swell even when the wind shifts. Worked great last night when the wind shifted, as the other boats in the cove rolled like crazy as they got turned sideways to the swell. Today is grey with a threat of rain, so we’re just sitting and catching up on stuff. The hope is that tomorrow will be sunny and if so, we’ll do some exploring-always nicer with blue skies instead of grey.
So…you’re relaxing at a cool little village on the water and I spent 3 hours fixing my dang fence that fell down god knows when. Although I did just get done watching basketball on a 50″ HD TV. So…we’re mostly even, but I think maybe y’all have a slight lead. Wait; yesterday I had this really good Mendoncino Oatmeal Stout. I think we are neck and neck now. But, crap, you had the whales. OK, you’re in the lead for sure.
Very, very small world. We’ve visit Chacala every time we go to Mexico. The beach front restaurant in the far left of your photo — blue umbrellas on the beach tables — does a terrific whole roasted fish. Buy by the kilo — simply fabulous. We spent an afternoon there last year watching a huge storm come ashore… very safe little cove you’ve chosen — the storm blew the furniture all over the place in our house an hour south of Chacala, but the boats in the cove did very well indeed. Just watch out for jellyfish — depending upon the time of year, they are quite prolific. The boogie-boarding is great — you can buy cheap ones in town, if you don’t have them.
Playa Naranja is a lovely beach (or so we’ve been told) a bit south of Chacala. It’s one of those places the care-taker at our house told us about — we’ve never been able to find it by car. It looks spectacular from Google maps… but that’s about as close as we’ve gotten.
There is a weekly market in La Penita on Wednesday — it’s decent and you ought to be able to anchor there, too. It’s about half-an-hour by road south of Chacala, have no idea what that translates into sailing time. Full name is La Penita de Jaltemba (I think), it’s right next to Rincon de Guayabitos (they are separated by a “river”).
Bob and Betsy will be in Mexico later this week, staying in San Francisco, a.k.a. San Pancho.
So your HD TV is bigger than our dinghy!
Wow, Joan, that is small! We are waiting for sun to come out so we can really see this place. Between rain “spits” the Mexican families go running out to the water giggling and squealing. We stayed home this morning and made bread and ginger cookies while Bob installed two fans in the main cabin.
Ironically our next anchorage is Jaltemba! We will look for the organic markets! This is the Mexico we were waiting to see. Chacala is really cute. We want to hike to the volcano upnon the hill when the sun comes out!
your next stop is the market! Great veggies and fish plus other great stuff!! REMEMBER the market is Wed but there are lots of other shops Bob and Betsy and Michael and Sonia And Dexter should be there on Sunday Casa Melissa in San Pancho! Bob’s cell that will work there is 860-354-3113 They would love to see you! Love you!! xxoo J
