Quick Note Tonight

Position: 17 degrees, 06 minutes south; 148 degrees, 22 minutes west

Just a short note tonight. It’s too bumpy to type. Beautiful night last night, but today’s been bouncing and squally and tonight looks like more of the same. Not the most comfortable sailing.

The good news is that we’re 64 NM from Papeete, so right on schedule for landfall at first light. We’re still maintaining our planned 5 knots average speed and there’s plenty of wind to get us there, so we only have the jib up and it’s about 50% furled. The wind shifted so the broad-reach has turned into more of a beam reach which is making it a bit wet too as the 2 meter waves occasionally splash the cockpit (like just now as I typed this I could hear water sloshing down the deck above my head).

That’s about all I can manage for now. We’ll check in with a more complete passage report tomorrow.

  1. Well, we went fishing today but it was more like cruising the lake. Saw lots of interesting wildlife but we really only wanted a jumping fish on the end of the line. No such luck. However, the dog enjoyed riding in the boat so that’s a plus. Since we haven’t been on the lake in a bunch of years this was the shakedown trip. We’ll definitely do better next time. As the saying goes, “They’d call it catching, instead of fishing, if you actually caught something.”

Hope your passage doesn’t get any more bouncy. I’ve never much liked bouncing around in autos, airplanes, or boats. Give me smooth pavement, air, or water every time. May the ocean gods still the waters for the rest of your journey.

  2. Glad you guys are okay and doing well. We are back in Hayfork, on land, since June 8. Real shock to the system, and I’m ready to go back to the boat! Looked over some pictures of our Racine (sp) night aboard Charisma with Camanoe (Camel Toe) and laughed and got really homesick. Stay safe.
